2017/18 Premier League Preview – Burnley

2017/18 Premier League Preview – Burnley

The 2017/18 Premier League season will be the fourth time Burnley have competed in the top-flight of English football since the Premier League was founded in 1992.

The big difference between last season and their previous two seasons in the Premier League is the fact Burnley managed to avoid relegation.  This is the first time in three attempts they have managed to avoid relegation to the Championship having been promoted the previous season.

Burnley finished 16th in the Premier League last season and it is with great credit to Sean Dyche that he managed to keep the Clarets out of the main relegation fight for much of the campaign. In fact, following the first match against Swansea City, Burnley never dropped any further than 16th the whole season.

While Burnley fans would like to finish higher up the table, realistically the best they can hope for is to avoid relegation again in the 2017/18 Premier League season.  Many onlookers have them as one of the favourites for the drop and at 6/5, only Huddersfield are considered better favourites for relegation with the bookmakers.

Perhaps the main reason Burnley are considered strong relegation candidates for the new season is the loss of central defender Michael Keane.  The former Manchester United man has joined Everton this summer having performed superbly for Burnley last season.  As it stands, Dyche is yet to sign a replacement for Keane and this could lead to problems defensively.

The current additions of Jonathan Walters, Phil Bardsley and Jack Cork all have Premier League experience, which is important but none of them are going to fill the void left by Keane at the heart of the Burnley defence.

It was the home form of Burnley which kept them up last season and they will need to replicate that or produce better results away from home if they are to retain their Premier League status. However, their first five away games see them visit Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City.

This run of games could see Burnley need the foot of the table, especially if they fail to recreate their home form of last season.  Burnley are 6/1 to finish bottom of the Premier League and 7/1 to be bottom at Christmas.

Last season’s top goal scorer was Welsh striker Sam Vokes, who netted 10 times in the Premier League.  Burnley will be hoping for a similar return from Vokes in the 2017/18 Premier League season but will be wanting more from Andre Gray.

The best Burnley can hope for next season is to finish in the top half of the table. If they perform above expectations and teams such as Bournemouth, Stoke City, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion fall short, Burnley could sneak into the top half.  This would be a fantastic result for Burnley but the odds of 10/1 for it to happen, suggest it is realistically out of reach.
