Crystal Palace have a decent squad of players on paper. However, the Eagles currently have an injury list that would make the local accident and emergency blush.
On Monday night Sam Allardyce’s side produced a top class performance to see off a weak Arsenal side 3-0 at Selhurst Park. The win moved the Eagles six points clear of the relegation zone.
The Eagles are by no means safe from the drop considering a difficult fixture list, but they are now starting to show their true quality. Palace have been highly ambitious in the transfer market in recent years.
The signings of the likes of Christian Benteke, Yohan Cabaye, Wilfried Zaha and even Mamadou Sakho in January show that the club is looking to move forward. A horrible start to the campaign under former favourite Alan Pardew saw the Eagles slumped towards the drop zone.
However, the shrewd signings of Sakho and midfielder Luka Milivojevic have helped reinforce an injury-hit backline, while in attack the likes of Benteke and Zaha, in particular, are thriving.
Zaha has become highly influential of late for Palace. The Ivory Coast international scored and created a goal a goal for Benteke at Chelsea and he was at it again against Arsenal. This time the former Manchester United picked up two assists and was a constant threat to a poor Arsenal backline. The winger is no doubt going to be a key player in the end of season run-in.
The six-point gap between the relegation zone and Palace is no really that big. The Eagles also still have to play Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Manchester United, with all four teams still competing for the top four places no doubt these games will be tough ones for Palace.
However, if Palace shows the same heart and quality as they have shown in victories over Chelsea and Arsenal then they will have no problem beating the drop this season.
