As expected England recorded a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Lithuania in World Cup qualifying on Sunday night. The game marked a return to the England side of veteran Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.
The 34-year-old opened the scoring after just 21 minutes to give the Three Lions the lead. Leicester striker Jamie Vardy added a second goal in the second half. Defoe was making his first appearance for the Three Lions since November 2013 and did what he did what he did best by finding the net.
There was discussion about whether the striker was too old to be called up to the England national squad before the game. However, the striker justified Gareth Southgate’s decision to start him with his goal and it looks unlikely to be the striker’s last involvement in England squads.
England currently have a dearth of available quality strikers, so Defoe could be a valuable asset to the Southgate in future games. Defoe has scored 14 times this season for bottom of the table Sunderland.
In fact, the striker has been the main reasons the Black Cats still have any hope of staying in the Premier League this season. Defoe has consistently scored goals in recent years for the north east side.
The diminutive striker just keeps scoring goals for club and country. The goal was against a vastly inferior team in Lithuania, but Defoe is a lethal finisher when he gets the chances in front of goal.
Jermain Defoe may not be a player that is going to be a long-term striking option for England. However, the Sunderland striker may just still have enough left in him to make next year’s World Cup.
The striker proved a lot of his doubters wrong with the goal and a generally lively performance against Lithuania.
