Paris Saint-Germain can’t dwell on Champions League exit

Paris Saint-Germain were undoubtedly confident going into the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash with La Liga heavyweights Barcelona earlier this week. They had produced an incredible 4-0 victory in the first leg and, given that no side had ever overturned a four goal deficit in the competition, their place in the quarter-final seemed to be all but guaranteed.

It seemed that way, at least until the final 7 minutes of play on Tuesday evening. Barcelona were leading 3-1, but they needed six to progress. Neymar made it four after 88 minutes, before adding another three minutes later, but it was unlikely hero Sergi Roberto’s last gasp goal that sentenced PSG to a 6-1 defeat, which rubber stamped their humiliating exit from the prestigious tournament.

While most were quick to accept their part in what was a shambolic display, there were the usual excuses bandied around too - Neymar shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty in the 88th minute, or PSG were denied two clear spot kicks. Perhaps that is a fair assessment, but that doesn’t change the fact that the club failed to perform on the night.

The media frenzy has since begun, labelling the club as a terrible mess, blaming particular players and picking apart their social lives in search of a cause for their unbelievable decline. Even for professional footballers, who are scrutinised in the newspapers every day, it will be hard to take.

However, PSG can’t forget that they are in the running for another top trophy - the Ligue 1 title. If anything, losing their place in the Champions League now means that it is even more important that they win a fifth consecutive league title.

They currently find themselves in third place, one point behind OGC Nice with a game in hand and three points behind league leaders AS Monaco. They will be confident that they can win their nine remaining games. However, they will need to put the Champions League behind them and focus on each and every match, as their opponents are likely to take confidence from Barcelona’s big win.

The blame game will undoubtedly continue in the press and they are likely to be going on behind the scenes, too. It’s easy to put the disappointing result down to a select few players and replace them in the matchday squad. However, with such a short amount of time remaining, now isn’t the time for an overhaul.

Although Nice and Monaco both stepping up this season, PSG have performed well in the domestic competitions, despite the loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic over the summer, and had they gone through, their 4-0 victory over Barcelona would have been the best result in the Champions League this season.

Results suggest that the heavy defeat to Barcelona was merely a blip and Unai Emery must treat it as one. There is still plenty to fight for this season and clinching the title would undoubtedly get the fans back onside. However, if they fail to do so, Tuesday night’s result could come back to haunt them.
