Who’s the Man to Take Leicester Forward?

Who’s the Man to Take Leicester Forward?

Having won the Premier League title in sensational fashion last season, the following season was always going to be tough for Leicester City.  No one expected them to stage a successful defence of their title or win the Champions League and although they remain in the latter, with a second leg to come against Sevilla, it is extremely unlikely they will win the competition.

However, despite not being in with a shout of winning the Premier League this season, the Foxes were not expected to be battling against relegation but that’s where they find themselves.  Unfortunately, this and the seeming unhappiness of players at the King Power Stadium, led to the sacking of Italian, Claudio Ranieri.  Much of the football media and fellow professionals were left shocked by the decision, especially as Ranieri had taken the club to the summit of English football but what’s done is done and Leicester need a new manager for the remainder of this season and beyond.

So, who should be the man to take Leicester forward?

Having defeated Liverpool convincingly on Monday night, current caretaker manager, Craig Shakespeare, has done his prospects the world of good.  Before the match, he was being discussed as an outside bet but having won the game 3-1, his odds have shortened considerably and he is now second favourite to be offered the job.  Shakespeare has been assistant to both Nigel Pearson and Ranieri meaning has experience of winning the Premier League and avoiding relegation with the club, making him the ideal candidate.  The players certainly responded to him against Liverpool and if he can guide the Foxes to another win over Hull at the weekend, the Leicester board must seriously consider appointing him, at least until the end of the season.

Former England manager, Roy Hodgson, has seen his odds significantly reduce in the last 24 hours and this suggests he has held talks with the club.  It’s no secret Hodgson would like to return to football management and his vast experience would be an asset to the club.  However, England’s dreadful showing at Euro 2016 isn’t a great endorsement but the Leicester owners may see beyond that and appoint the 69-year-old.  Another well-known face being linked to the job is Nigel Pearson.  He was sacked by Leicester at the end of the 2014/15 season due to "fundamental differences" between himself and the board.  Pearson led Leicester to safety during the 2014/15 season but surely, following his dismissal from the club, he is very unlikely to be offered a return?

Other options include former Chelsea manager, Guus Hiddink, who has a proven ability to get clubs back on an even footing following a destabilising period.  The 70-year-old certainly has what it takes to keep the club in the Premier League but this is not a job which will tempt him out retirement unless the reward is significant.  Another potential candidate is Alan Pardew.  However, the fact Pardew failed to address the slump of his former club, Crystal Palace, makes him a less attractive option.

With the job, seemingly his to lose, Craig Shakespeare appears to be the favourite but with the experience of Roy Hodgson waiting in the wings, anything but a win over Hull on the weekend, could see Hodgson installed next week.
