Champions League exit would benefit Monaco

Champions League exit would benefit Monaco

Three goals against Manchester City took Monaco’s tally for the season to 111 goals in all competitions. That feat saw them leapfrog second-placed Barcelona, who have scored 109 times so far this season, as the best goalscoring side in Europe’s top five leagues - the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

Despite their fantastic goal haul, they were unable to secure the victory against a Manchester City side that seemed desperate not to lose. Monaco conceded three times in the last 20 minutes of play against Pep Guardiola’s side, yet their display proved that they can cut it against the very best sides in Europe.

With three away goals to take into the second leg, which is set to be played at their Stade Louis II stadium, a 2-0, 3-1 or 4-2 win would be enough to see them through to the quarter final stage of the prestigious continental tournament.

With the likes of reinvigorated striker Radamel Falcao and emerging talent Kylian Mbappé leading the line, as well as the brilliance of wingers Thomas Lemar and Bernardo Silva supplying them with plenty of service, this Monaco side are more than capable of overturning the deficit in front of their home crowd.

However, while the Champions League is undisputably the biggest prize in club football, a run into the later stages might not be the best situation for Monaco. Realistically, even if they can maneuver past Manchester City into the next round, their chances of winning the Champions League are still slim. It would be much wiser to bow out gracefully and turn their attentions to the Ligue 1 title race.

They currently sit at the top of the table in the French top division, three points ahead of second and third placed Paris Saint-Germain and OGC Nice. While everyone was focused on the prospect of Nice toppling PSG and ending the Parisian club’s run of four consecutive league titles, Monaco waited patiently for their chance to sneak into the lead. Their first league title since the 1999/2000 season is now within touching distance.

However, with four trophies still to compete for, Leonardo Jardim’s side run the risk of burning out before they reach the finish line.

They have already secured their place in the Coupe de la Ligue final, so there is little to worry about on that front until they come up against PSG in April. Although, they still have games to play in the Coupe de France, starting against Marseille next month. However, the Champions League poses the biggest threat to their title chances.

The journey too and from continental games can take days at a time, while they will also be facing off against much tougher opposition. Manchester City are proving difficult enough, but games against the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid would be much more gruelling.

Of course, a run into the later round of the Champions League would excite the fans, and big games against top, top sides are hard to come by. Yet, out of a Ligue 1 title and a cameo appearance in the Champions League, few fans would choose the latter.
