Bayern Munich getting by without Thomas Muller

German giants Bayern Munich reportedly turned down a record breaking transfer bid, topping the £85 million that Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale back in 2013, last summer. The offer, from Premier League heavyweights Manchester United, would have seen star forward Thomas Muller prised away from the club that he has spent his entire senior career at.

Unsurprisingly, the offer was turned down. Muller has just finished one of the best seasons of his career, having scored 32 times and provided 12 assists in just 49 games. Players of that calibre aren’t easy to get hold of and Bayern undoubtedly made the right decision to keep him around.

Yet, seven months down the line, the Bundesliga champions are probably kicking themselves to have turned down such a large offer, given the miraculous turn of form that Muller has suffered.

The usually prolific forward has netted just one time in the league so far this term. That one goal came against Wolfsburg, a team struggling to keep themselves out of the relegation zone, back in December after 999 minutes of action without finding the net. He has now gone another five league games without a goal since and looks far from the player that he was last season.

Muller was viewed as a key component at Bayern Munich last summer - a player that would bring the hugely successful team crashing down should he depart. But without him Bayern Munich have looked just as dominant as ever.

Despite suffering a blip of their own during October and November, in which they lost one and drew three in a run of six games, Bayern have continued to hold on to the Bundesliga top spot that they have made their own over the last five years.

They have had to cope with more pressure that most years, with the unexpected emergence of RB Leipzig, in what if their first season as a top flight team, which has put pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but they have coped well and proven that they are still Germany’s best side by a long mile.

A 2-0 victory over FC Ingolstadt saw the club pull seven points ahead in the race for the Bundesliga title, as Leipzig dropped yet more points against relegation candidates Hamburger SV.

Muller returned to the starting line-up after being dropped to the bench for their midweek cup tie against Wolfsburg. He was unable to make a difference once again, but Bayern had plenty of quality to step up in his place.

With Bayern unlikely to drop too many more points over the next two months, the Bundesliga title race seems to have been wrapped up, with or without Muller’s input. The German international is still a popular figure in Munich, but the longer this poor run goes on, the more the club will realise that he isn’t quite as untouchable as they thought.
