Mainz to get back to winning ways ?

Mainz to get back to winning ways ?

Augsburg travel to the Opel Arena on Friday to face Mainz 05 and be hoping to continue their winning streak and establish consistency. They have won their last two games, and even though none of the wins was emphatic, it shows they are capable of grinding out good results. Their last two results are the first time they have won back-to-back games this season, and that would provide a confidence boost ahead of the visit to the Opel Arena.

They currently sit tenth on the Bundesliga table, the highest they have risen to at any point so far this season. They are also two points above Mainz 05 and would see Friday’s fixture as an opportunity to extend the gap to five points. Their recent away form is decent enough to expect them to pick something from the meeting as they have only lost one of the last five away games, winning two and also drawing two. They may also decide to take a cautious approach to the game, putting more priority on ensuring they don’t lose the two-point gap rather than increasing it, so they may play a defensive game.

Mainz 05, on the other hand, will be determined to put their recent disappointing results behind them, and they will see getting a positive result against Augsburg as a great start. Their 2017 began on a decent note as they were able to avoid defeats against both FC Cologne and Borussia Dortmund. However, last weekend was a brutal wake-up call for them as they lost heavily to Hoffenheim, they were beaten 4-0. They have won just one of their last eight fixtures and have scored just once so far since the end of the winter break.

They currently occupy the thirteenth position on the Bundesliga table and are on the same number of points as Schalke 04 who are twelfth on the table. They are just six points above relegation waters and will need every point they can get from here on to avoid getting into a relegation battle. Besides the problems they have in attack, they also have one of the worst defensive records in the league; in nineteen matches, they have conceded thirty-five goals, the third joint worst defensive record in the league. Their home games have not been the worst though; they have just one loss out of their nine home matches so far this season.

On a head-to-head basis, Mainz 05 have the edge as they have won seven games, drawn four and lost just four of their last fifteen clashes. They also haven’t lost any of their last six matches against Augsburg, winning five and drawing the last one. Friday’s meeting will be a tight affair and a tough one to call, but a bet on both teams scoring may be a smart move.
