Top four is the target for City as they visit West Ham on Wednesday

Top four is the target for City as they visit West Ham on Wednesday

Manchester City travel to play West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday night, knowing they must win the match, just to maintain their challenge for a place in the top four.  As for West Ham, they are aiming to continue their rise in the league table although the thought of European qualification for next season has long gone.

Manchester City comfortably defeated Crystal Palace away from home in the FA Cup on Saturday. This was a much-needed win for Pep Guardiola’s team, who had failed to win their previous two matches in the Premier League.  Recent results have been a mixed bag, with many onlookers believing they deserved more in their match against Tottenham, which finished in a 2-2 draw. Once again, it was the Manchester City defence which was brought into question, as they surrendered a two-goal lead. Their last away match in the Premier League was awful and they went down 4-0 at Everton, meaning City have won only one of their last four matches in the Premier League and lost three of the last four away from home.

West Ham reversed a run of three straight defeats in all competitions by winning their last two Premier League games. Both were good wins, the first a 3-0 home victory against Crystal Palace and the second a 3-1 win at Middlesbrough.  At home in the Premier League, West Ham have won three of their last four matches but seem to struggle when playing the top teams, as the home defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal highlight.

Trends show West Ham have scored at least once in seven of their last eight home Premier League games and Slaven Bilic will be confident of finding the back of the net against Manchester City. Andy Carroll has been in fine form since his return from injury, scoring three in his last two games and will be a huge threat to the vulnerable Manchester City defence. Back Carroll to get a goal in this game.

Looking at Manchester City’s trends and there have been over 2.5 goals in their last five games in all competitions. City have scored at least one goal in their last eleven matches against West Ham and there have been over 2.5 goals scored in City’s last five away games against West Ham in all competitions. This suggests there are going to be goals in this game and we should see over 2.5 goals.

It’s not easy to predict a winner from this game. West Ham have showed signs of improvement whereas you do not know what you are going to get from Manchester City one week to the next.  If West Ham can score the first goal, you sense they will go on to win the match, as City will struggle mentally to come back and win the game.  Either way, there should be plenty of goals to enjoy and it will be interesting to see how the away defence cope with the presence of Carroll in the West Ham attack.
