Liverpool’s woes continue with Wolves defeat

Liverpool have at times thrilled spectators in the Premier League this season. However, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is now enduring his most difficult spell of his Liverpool career, as his team have now won just once in their last eight games in all competitions.

That eighth game was a shock 2-1 home defeat by Championship Wolves in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday. The side from Merseyside have now lost their last three outings at Anfield.

If they suffer defeat against Chelsea in the midweek Premier League clash then the Reds will equal an unwanted record of four straight home defeats set 94 years ago.

The current situation is a far cry from a couple of months ago when Klopp’s team look so assured and brimming with confidence. The Merseysider’s are now out of both domestic cup competitions and look like long shots for the Premier League title, ten points behind Tuesday’s opponents Chelsea.

Another failure to record maximum points against Chelsea could even put a dent in the Reds top four aspirations this season.

Liverpool have missed winger Sadio Mane, who has been at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, Mane missed a crucial penalty in Senegal’s quarter-final clash with Cameroon. That means the winger will be heading back to Merseyside in the near future.

Whether he will feature against Chelsea remains to be seen. His return to the Reds team could prove to be crucial, though. Summer signing Mane had been one of the Reds key attacking players this season and their attacking play is sure to improve with his reintroduction to the team.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool face a very testing couple of weeks. The next few games could well define the German managers Liverpool career, so he and the fans will be looking for a major upturn in form in the near future.
