Same Old Failings Continue to Haunt Liverpool

Having allowed a lead to slip late in the game at Old Trafford last weekend, Liverpool needed to win their match against Swansea City on Saturday to keep the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.

Having picked up only 2 points from their previous two league games, the chance to play the bottom club at home, was exactly what Liverpool required to get back to winning ways.  However, things did not turn out in the way most onlookers expected.

It was a case of the Premier League’s best attack, against the league’s worst defence and the home crowd were quiet, sitting in expectation of a comfortable home victory.  Come half-time and the expression on the faces of Liverpool fans inside Anfield had changed to one of concern, as their team dominated possession of the ball and territory in the first 45 minutes, but struggled to make the breakthrough.  Swansea were proving a frustrating team to play against, conceding tactical fouls and slowing the match down as often as they could.  It was working.

At the start of the second half, Liverpool minds were obviously on getting the goal the they needed, as they allowed Swansea to come forward and Fernando Llorente gave the Welsh club the lead.  The visitors lead was quickly doubled, as Llorente pounced for his second of the game, a fantastic header.  Anfield was left stunned but this seemed to galvanise the Liverpool players and they struck back soon after, with a Roberto Firmino header.  The Brazilian then scored an excellent second and there seemed as though there could only be one winner.  However, Swansea broke away and the ball was deflected into the path of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who finished clinically to edge Swansea back in-front.

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, was showing signs of desperation as he put defender Joel Matip up-front towards the end of the match and started to send the ball long.  A move which must have brought much laughter from red side of Manchester.  There was clearly no genuine plan-b in place and the Liverpool players looked tired.  This was a hugely damaging defeat for the club.

This season, Liverpool have defeated Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton.  They have dropped points against Burnley, Southampton, Bournemouth, West Ham, Sunderland and Swansea.  In a Premier League table for points gained against teams currently in the bottom half of the table, Liverpool would be in ninth place and this sums up their problem this season, a problem which is not new to the club.

The next Premier League match for Liverpool is at home to Chelsea.  This has been labelled as a must-win for Klopp’s team.  It is but if Chelsea defeat Hull this weekend, they will arrive at Anfield with a 10-point cushion and a win for Liverpool is not going to stop Antonio Conte’s team from winning the league from this position.
