The managerial career of Louis van Gaal

The managerial career of Louis van Gaal

The immediate past Manchester United manager made a retirement announcement on 16th January, citing family reasons. The Dutch tactician whose full name is Aloysius Paulus Maria van Gaal’s last job was at Old Trafford where he spent two years and won the FA cup after enduring a difficult last six months.

He and the English club went their separate ways after a disappointing second season in charge and he has been out of job since then. His announcement comes as a surprise after he stated sometime back that he intended to take another job after his time in England, and it was reported that he received an offer from a Chinese club. "I could go there, but I'm still here, so much has happened in my family", he was quoted as saying to De Telegraaf.

The sixty-five year old will go down as one of the best football management brains of his generation, having managed some of the biggest football clubs in Europe. He managed and won trophies in Ajax where he won the champions league with one of the youngest squads in Champions league history and playing some of the best football in that period, going the whole season unbeaten in both the league and the Champions league.

He also managed Barcelona in Spain two separate times, winning 3 league titles in total. He also managed Bayern Munich in Germany where he won the bundesliga title and also reached the final of the UEFA Champions league where he lost to his former student and assistant at Barcelona, Jose Mourinho who was in charge of Internazionale. After his time in Germany, he went back to Holland to manage AZ Alkmaar where he won them their first eredivisie title in 28 years, before coming to the premier league to manage Manchester United where he won the FA cup. He also had two stints as the Dutch national team coach, first for two years from year 2000 to 2002 and also, from 2012 to 2014.

Apart from his achievements with the teams he managed, Louis van Gaal can also boast of a conveyor belt of several quality managers who in one way or another have ties with or have been influenced by him. Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are two worldclass managers who have either worked with or played for him, and by extension Brendan Rodgers, Aitor Karanka, etc.

Louis van Gaal was also one of the pioneers of possession football commonly called tiki-taka which he introduced everywhere he managed. He still had plans to return to coaching after his stint at Manchester United, but that became doubtful after there were reports that he started considering changing his mind after one of his daughters lost her husband. "I thought maybe I would stop, then I thought it would be a sabbatical, but now I do not think I will return to coaching", he told De Telegraaf.

Louis van Gaal's managerial honors include 4 eredivisie titles, 3 la liga titles, 1 bundesliga title, 1 UEFA Champions league title, 1 UEFA cup, 2 UEFA Super Cups, 1 Copa del ray, 1 English FA Cup, among others.
