Serie A title race is on

In the week Juventus unveiled their new club logo, the Serie A title race opened up and the pressure is beginning to mount at the top of the table.

Juventus travelled to Florence to take on Fiorentina last weekend and were expected to come away with maximum points. Fiorentina had failed to win any of their previous three Serie A matches and were some 18 points adrift of Juventus in the league table. Not only that but Paulo Sousa’s team had lost their last five matches against Juventus and this game was seen as another step towards the Serie A title for the Bianconeri.

However, Max Allegri’s team left the Artemio Franchi Stadium with their tail between their legs, as Fiorentina secured an excellent 2-1 victory and blew the Serie A title race wide open in the process. By conceding 2 goals, the Juventus defence has conceded at least 1 goal in each of their last five away Serie A games, the first time that has happened since March 2013. It was the fourth defeat of the season in Serie A for Juventus, all of which have come away from home and it is clear where further points could be dropped this season, if Juventus do not improve on the road.

With away matches to come at both Roma and Napoli, plus tricky looking trips to Atalanta and Sampdoria, the potential is there for Juventus to lose more games this season and allow other teams to close in on them at the top of the table.

Roma, who were unlucky to lose to Juventus in December, have responded well and enjoyed two good away wins in their most recent Serie A games, keeping a clean sheet in both.  They have already been to Turin and Naples this season, with two trips to the San Siro looking like their toughest remaining fixtures.

Napoli are also in excellent form and are currently unbeaten in nine Serie A games.  They have also been to Juventus this season but their away fixtures look tougher than Roma’s, with trips to Milan, Torino and Rome, to play both Lazio and Roma.  Still, given their current form, there is nothing to suggest Napoli won’t pick up points from these games.

Juventus currently sit 1 point clear at the top of Serie A, with a game in hand but the momentum is currently with the two teams sitting below them. Everyone who follows Serie A, other than Juventus fans, will be hoping Roma and Napoli can continue their great form and keep the title race alive until the end of the season. With Juventus travelling to Napoli at the beginning of April, imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like, if both are competing for the title, in addition to the return of Gonzalo Higuain. Then, with just three matches remaining in Serie A, Juventus travel to the capital to face Roma, which could have a huge bearing on who wins the Scudetto.

It’s exciting times in Serie A and let’s hope it continues that way until the end of the season.
