    Southampton Defeat Highlights Liverpool Problem

    Southampton Defeat Highlights Liverpool Problem

Without doubt, Liverpool have played some of the best football in the English top flight this season.  They have pressed teams high up the pitch from the first whistle and it has been entertaining to watch them go about their business.  The top goal scorers in the Premier League, Liverpool have recorded some impressive results, especially at home. However, Jurgen Klopp’s team went down 1-0 to Southampton in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final this week, in what was a worrying performance for Reds fans.

Although the match finished 1-0 and Liverpool will back themselves to turn it around at Anfield in the second leg, it could have been much worse.  If Southampton had won the match 3-0, Liverpool could not complain.  So, what was the problem for Klopp’s team?

Liverpool may have scored plenty of goals but they have also been conceding them and they looked very uncomfortable at the back against Southampton.  Ragnar Klavan looked very anxious in his play throughout the 90 minutes, making basic errors defensively and struggling when on the ball.  The build-up play through midfield was too slow to trouble Southampton.  Emre Can in particular took too much time to move the ball and get it forward, which meant Southampton were always in shape and ready to stop Liverpool when they did eventually try and attack.  Then there is Daniel Sturridge, who had a great opportunity to get his name at the front of the queue for the match at Old Trafford on Sunday but he was poor.  Southampton defender, Virgil van Dijk, enjoyed a comfortable game and the camera only stayed on Sturridge for a prolonged period during the match because he received tactical instructions on a piece of paper from his manager.

Liverpool fans will be hoping Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Joel Matip are fit for the huge match at Manchester United on Sunday.  If they are fit, expect to see the three names above dropping out of the starting XI.  That’s Liverpool’s problem, they do not have the players to step in and replicate the jobs of those in Klopp’s preferred starting XI.  Given the style of play adopted by Klopp, every player in the squad is important, as they are going to have a role to play throughout the season.  Football players are human beings after all and by continually playing a high energy, pressing style of football, it is going to take its toll on them and there will be injuries and periods of rest required.  If the players who come into the team are unable to slot in and continue with the same style of play, it is going to cause problems.

Liverpool have gone three matches without a win for the first time this season, which is a concern ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. Manchester United are flying and will feel they can make a massive statement by defeating Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.  Can Liverpool return to the form they showed at the end of 2016 and push for the title or are the signs there that they are running out of steam?
