On Wednesday night Arsenal and Southampton go head-to-head at the Emirates Stadium in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Arsenal would usually be regarded as the favourites to win a clash at home against Southampton and Forebet predicts a home win. However, Arsenal’s boss Arsene Wenger has a tendency to use the League Cup to give game time to his squad players and rests a number of his star names.

The veteran French boss has taken the same policy this season giving game time to youngsters and fringe players in his squad in previous rounds. However, despite fielding weakened teams the side from north London have beaten Nottingham Forest and Reading with ease in the last two rounds.

It could be argued that both teams are from the second tier and for neither the EFL Cup is regarded as a priority this season. The EFL Cup is definitely not where Arsene Wenger’s priorities lie that is for sure.

The Gunners have once again made the knockout stages of the Champions League, as well as mounting a Premier League title challenge. However, despite this competition not being a priority, we are getting closer to the business end of the competition.

A win would put the Gunners into the last four of the competition and move them closer to winning a trophy, which by their high standards there has been a lack of recently in north London.

Southampton stand in the way of Arsenal progressing into the semi-final of the competition, having seen off Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the two previous rounds. The Saints have enjoyed an inconsistent campaign so far and have won just once on their travels in nine games in all competitions.

Southampton boss Claude Puel has named weakened teams in the two previous rounds. However, the fact that the Saints are facing Arsenal may well lead to the Frenchman naming a strong team. If he does then Arsenal will face a big test of their resilience and character in this clash.
