In the summer there seemed to be a bright new dawn at Everton. The Merseysider’s had a new rich owner and a new high-profile boss. The team were tipped for big things this season.

The Toffees have now claimed just one win from their last eight outings in all competitions after a 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Sunday. The defeat was coupled with a poor performance, with half of the Toffees team seemingly lacking confidence.

Big name attacking players like Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley are simply not producing the form that they have proven they could in the past. Lukaku barely had a kick of the ball and was notably frustrated at times during the game.

Barkley missed a golden headed opportunity in the first half and was substituted in the second half. His all-around game was okay, but his career seems to have stalled after being hyped as one of England’s brightest young midfielders in the past couple of years.

Even the likes of the normally reliable Phil Jagielka, Ashley Williams and Leighton Baines look very short on confidence. The performances of the team must be worrying boss Ronald Koeman, as well as the fans.

The Dutchman has a big job on his hands trying to rectify the problems in his squad. The experienced boss took over an ailing team last summer, but then the Toffees enjoyed a good start to the campaign.

That good start is well and truly now in the past, as the side from Merseyside seems to lurch from one disappointing result to another. Koeman was handed a massive contract in the summer and the former Southampton boss will now be expected to turn things around.

If he cannot turn things around with the current set of players, then the Toffees may need to enter the transfer market in January to inject new life and confidence into their team.
