Positives to take for England from Spain draw

Positives to take for England from Spain draw

England and Spain drew 2-2 at Wembley on Tuesday night in an entertaining friendly match. Until the 89th minute, the home side were two goals up through efforts from Adam Lallana and Jamie Vardy.

However, goals from Iago Aspas and Isco rescued an unlikely draw for an experimental Spain side in the English capital. Questions will be asked about England concerning the late goals of course, but there we definitely positives to take from the game.

Interim England boss Gareth Southgate sent his team out to disrupt the Spaniards passing game. For much of the game, the Three Lions did that in pretty good style. They harried and at times pressed high up the field.

The pace of the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jamie Vardy caused the visiting defence problem that is for sure. Despite the accusation that Spain were not at full strength, La Roja were pretty strong considering the players they did field.

The performance will certainly not dissuade the English FA to offer Gareth Southgate the job on a permanent basis. The former-Boro has won two and drew two of his games, but he cannot be expected to perform miracles in just four games.

Southgate is the favourite for the job and has stated he felt he has brought stability to the team. The team have not been poor under his management and he deserves his chance as England boss.

For Southgate to have a big impact he will have to be given the job on a permanent basis. If he is appointed on a full-time basis then there are likely to be changes in the team. Being an ex-defender he may well look at making the Three Lions more stable at the back.

However, the draw with Spain shows that there is a decent foundation from which he can start to build a very decent team.
