Inter Milan struggling in bottom half

Inter Milan struggling in bottom half

Following the 1-0 defeat at Sampdoria on Sunday night, Inter Milan have been left languishing in the bottom half of the Serie A table, as pressure mounts on manager, Frank de Boer.

The Nerazzurri have 14 points from their eleven games played, leaving them in 11th place this season, 8 points off AC Milan, who are in third and 13 points off leaders Juventus. It’s not as if Inter have failed to act in the transfer market in recent years, this summer saw £100 million spent on the likes of Joao Mario, Gabriel, Antonio Candreva, Stevan Jovetic, Dodo and Cristian Asnaldi. Add these players to those who were brought in last season, including Geoffrey Kondogbia, Ivan Perisic, Miranda, Felipe Melo and Eder and Inter have spent plenty of money, in an attempt to mount a challenge at the top of Serie A.

The season started poorly, with 1 point from the matches against Chievo and Palermo but things started to pick up and a 2-1 win at the San Siro against champions Juventus, was sandwiched between victories over Pescara and Empoli.  Frank de Boer seemingly had Inter moving in the right direction.  However, a 1-1 draw at home to Bologna was followed by a defeat at Roma.  The 1-0 loss at Sampdoria on Sunday night, was Inter’s fourth Serie A defeat in five games, having lost to both Atalanta and Cagliari prior to that game.

So, what’s the problem at Inter Milan? They have a squad full of good players and they showed exactly what they were capable of doing in the win against Juventus. Yet four recent defeats in Serie A, means there must be an issue somewhere, as on paper, Inter Milan are much better than the results they are currently producing.

With Laurent Blanc and Leonardo being linked with the manager’s job, Frank de Boer spoke about the mentality of the team, after the match against Sampdoria. “This is just an issue of mentality,” said de Boer, “"We must forget the first half, we did not play. In the second half, yes, we played but we cannot start like this – only playing after 45 minutes. I am very disappointed with the first half."

If this is true and the players are struggling to produce a performance over 90 minutes because of a mentality problem, then surely the coach is going to have questions to answer from the board?  Prior to the match, the Inter board said de Boer’s job was 100% safe, however, following this defeat and the comments afterwards, they may change their mind.

Inter Milan’s next match is at Southampton in the Europa League and with only 3 points from a possible 9 in that competition, defeat could mean elimination from Europe. If that is the case, de Boer’s position at the San Siro will come under serious scrutiny.  Inter have Crotone at home next weekend in Serie A before the Milan derby the week after. Anything other than a victory over Crotone, could mean de Boer will no longer be in charge of the team, come their biggest match of the season.
