Watford quietly progressing under Walter Mazzarri

Watford quietly progressing under Walter Mazzarri

Watford have now gone four games unbeaten in the Premier League after beating struggling Hull City 1-0 at Vicarage Road on Saturday. The win moved the Hornets up to seventh in the table, as Walter Mazzarri’s side shows signs of quiet progression.

The summer appointment of the Italian boss was a slight gamble for the Hornets. Predecessor Quique Sanchez Flores had done a decent job keeping the side from Hertfordshire in the top-flight. However, a nightmare run towards the end of the campaign saw the Spaniard lose his job.

With the Hornets managerial merry-go-round off again this summer, Mazzarri was the next to get on. The experienced boss had experienced mixed results in Italian football. His tactical acumen was much-lauded at Napoli, but then a failed stint at Inter tarnished his reputation.

The gamble was that the Italian had no experience of the English top-flight and his spell at Inter had obviously not been successful. The Hornets hierarchy the Pozzo family are not afraid to sack bosses, but they usually have an eye for a boss who can bring the club short-term success at least.

Slavisa Jokanovic helped the club to promotion but then failed to agree on a new contract. Flores then arrived, kept the club in the top-flight and also took them to the FA Cup semi-final. As talked about earlier that was not enough and Flores was sacked.

Unusually for Watford of late, the Hornets have given Mazzarri a three-year contract. The deal shows that the club's hierarchy have faith in the Italian. The team’s steady if unspectacular start to the campaign suggests that the Hornets could well threaten a top-half finish this season.

The team have kept consecutive clean sheets in their last three top-flight games. The Hornets seem to be built on solid foundations. If they continue in their current vein, Mazzarri’s side could achieve the owners reported aim of a top-ten finish this season.
