Red Devils will struggle to challenge for the title

Manchester United were billed as one of the favourites to win the Premier League title this season. The summer arrival of high-profile figures like Jose Mourinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba were supposed to be the catalyst for a title challenge.

On Saturday, United drew 0-0 with Burnley at Old Trafford, having had 37 shots on the Clarets goal. The lack of clinical edge in front of goal cost the Red Devils and left them trailing league leaders Manchester City by eight points.

In truth, to believe that United would be title challengers based on the fact they brought in the likes Mourinho, Ibrahimovic and Pogba was slightly optimistic. United finished fifth last season and not even in the Champions League spots.

To expect them to suddenly become a formidable force because of the addition of a few big European names was very ambitious. The Red Devils squad is stronger now than it was last season, but it is still lacking quality in certain areas.

United’s recent displays have led to question marks over the performances of both Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba. The former arrived in England on the back of his most prolific goalscoring campaign of his career.

Despite a bright start to his United career, the Swede has scored just once in his last 11 outings for the Red Devils in all competitions. There have been calls from United fans to drop the out-of-form striker from the starting line-up.

Pogba has not exactly hit the ground running in his second stint at the club either, although his performances have improved slightly in recent weeks.

At the moment it is hard to see United mounting a genuine title challenge this season. The Red Devils form may improve later on in the season, but that could prove too late to win the title this season.
