Liga Portugal 7Pre-qualifiers may be a good idea for future World Cups
The European section of World Cup qualifiers tends to have a familiar theme. Every qualification campaign the likes of San Marino, Andorra, Gibraltar and the Faroe Isles suffered heavy defeats in many of their matches.
Last night’s games were proof that some countries are out of their depth in World Cup qualifying. The Faroe Islands suffered a 6-0 home hammering against European champions Portugal, while Gibraltar were trounced 6-0 at home against Belgium.
In reality, would the World Cup groups not be more competitive if there were pre-qualifiers before the group stages? This would cut down the number of games and miss-matches along the way.
It would mean that the countries that have qualified actually deserve to be there and have shown it by actually trying to win games. Most of these smaller nations in qualifying just attempt to keep the scorelines respectable and often fail, because they are simply not on the same level as their opponents.
It is not doing these countries any good to be hammered by players that are simply in a different league to their own. Often the players representing some of the smaller countries in Europe are not even professional players.
Some will say that these teams have the right to play in qualifying, but in fact, their participation may actually be doing the player's development harm. I cannot see how being part of a team that is hammered 6-0 at home can be good for a player’s mental moral.
In World Cup qualifying in some of the other continents, there are pre-qualifiers and it means that there are less pointless one-sided games taking place. The European section could do well to take heed from the likes of their Africa and Asia counterparts when it comes to pre-qualifiers.
Most fans take little satisfaction in watching their team hammering a team who are of such a poor standard.
