Crystal Palace must arrest slump quickly

Crystal Palace must arrest slump quickly

Last season Crystal Palace started the Premier League campaign in good fashion, but the player’s attention was taken off their league campaign by a run to the FA Cup final. The Eagles lost that final 2-1 to Manchester United.

Their FA Cup run distracted from the fact that the Eagles form in the Premier league towards the end of last season was woeful. Alan Pardew’s side have won just twice in 2016 and they have won just two of their last 24 top-flight games.

They have started the new campaign with just one point from three Premier League games, as their struggles continue.

The Eagles spent big this summer on the likes of Andros Townsend, James Tomkins and Christian Benteke in an effort to strengthen their team.

This weekend they face a trip to top-flight new boys Middlesbrough, who have started their campaign with a win and two draws. At first glance, the trip to the Riverside Stadium looks like the ideal one for Palace to get back on track, but looks can be deceptive.

The north east side had a strong home record in the Championship and under Spanish boss Aitor Karanka does not concede many goals. They are likely to be stubborn opposition for every team this season in the Premier League, so this game may not be the one that Palace gets back on track.

Palace have been handed both positives and negatives going into this clash. The Eagles managed to strengthen their midfield department with the signing of former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini on Thursday.

However, they have lost the services of on-loan striker Loic Remy for up to two months because of a thigh injury. The 29-year-old has returned to Chelsea for treatment on a thigh problem.

Crystal Palace have to start improving and quickly if they are to avoid a relegation dogfight this season, but the Eagles may not be heading home from the north east this weekend with their third win of 2012.
