Liverpool continues unpredictable form under Klopp

The Premier League’s Jekyll and Hyde were at it again at the weekend, as Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat at top-flight new boys Burnley. The defeat came on the back of an exciting 4-3 win at Arsenal on the opening day of the campaign.

The Reds were highly unpredictable last season under the affable Jurgen Klopp. The side from Merseyside produce some fantastic wins last season but then suffered some very poor defeats as well.

Just like a number occasions last season, Klopp’s ‘heavy-metal’ football fell flat at Turf Moor. Gone was the vigour and verve produced at the Emirates Stadium less than a week ago. Instead, it was replaced by a lacklustre display.

Most concerning of all was that the team’s defensive deficiencies from last season are still there for all to see. Despite having a summer to sort of the Reds defence, they still look highly vulnerable, which has been proven by the five goals conceded in their two Premier League games.

Klopp brought in Estonian international Ragnar Klavan in an attempt to make his team more solid. However, the former Mainz player produced a terrible display against the Clarets. The Reds boss also signed Cameroon international Joel Matip in the summer, but the centre-back has not featured yet for the Merseysiders.

Liverpool were touted as one of the dark horses for the Premier League title this season, simply because of the amount of quality attacking players they have in their squad.

However, if they continue to be as poor in defence for the rest of the season that tag of being the Jekyll and Hyde of the English top-flight will be hard to shake off.
