Idrissa Gueye could be a bargain for Everton

There has been much talk about Everton spending big and improving their squad this summer following fresh investment. The only signing has so far this summer was experienced Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who is only expected to be a backup goalkeeper next season.

The recent appointment of former Leicester head of recruitment Steve Walsh as director of football should oil the wheels of the transfers somewhat.

Walsh’s appointment may have had an immediate effect. The Toffees seem to be on the verge of completing their second signing of the summer in the shape of Aston Villa defensive midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

The Senegal international had a release clause of £7.1million in his contract with the Villans and the Toffees have been discussing terms with the former Lille star.

Villa were relegated to the Championship last season, but to be fair Gueye was one of their top performers. The 26-year-old was one of the few that showed any fight and quality in a disastrous campaign for the Villans.

Gueye has been compared to Chelsea’s new £32.5million man N’Golo Kante. The stats suggest that comparison is not unfair. The Senegalese international made more passes than Kante and his pass accuracy was also higher at 85.55 compared to Kante’s rate of 81.64.

It seems Everton fans are not convinced by this move in the transfer market after months of the Merseyside club being linked with high-profile players such as Juan Mata and Alex Witsel.

No doubt more high-profile signings will arrive at Everton this summer. However, Gueye will strengthen the Toffees defensive midfield options and at the mooted fee could turn out to be one of the bargains of the campaign.
