Could Vlahovic Arrival Boost Juventus’ Title Chances?

Could Vlahovic Arrival Boost Juventus’ Title Chances?
    01/31/2022 1772

Dusan Vlahovic was always going to leave Fiorentina, whether it was in the winter transfer window or come the end of the season. What was not clear was the destination of the Serbian striker and Arsenal were leading the charge to sign him.

However, as the January window moved on, Vlahovic did not make the move to the Emirates Stadium and there were rumours a club closer to home had shown interest.

Step forward Juventus and on Vlahovic’s 22nd birthday, he travelled to Turin for a medical. The Young Player of the Year in Serie A waved to fans in Turin as he left the building and perhaps the shock nature of the deal had caught some by surprise.

When new chief executive Maurizio Arrivabene was appointed last summer, it seemed as though the days of spending big had gone. The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo was a move towards a more sustainable way of running of the club and Juventus announced a loss of €210 million following a shareholders meeting in September.

Nonetheless, Juventus have found the funds to buy Vlahovic from Fiorentina for €75 million. Earlier in the transfer window, Juventus were being linked with a move on loan for Anthony Martial and that was more fitting with their financial position.

The loan for Martial would allow them to add a striker to the mix without having to spend money on a transfer fee and then make a big money singing in the summer.

However, Juventus caught everyone off guard by announcing the transfer of Vlahovic and the move happened because Fiorentina were willing to sell as soon as possible.

Vlahovic had 18 months left on his contract and his value was only going to deteriorate as he moved closer to the end of his deal. Fiorentina offered the striker a new contract but there were issues, including the agents’ commission and the signing-on fee, which prevented the player from putting pen to paper.

Juventus’ need for a quality striker has become apparent this season, no more so than in the recent 0-0 draw with AC Milan. Juventus failed to have a single shot on target in the game and the club believe the arrival of Vlahovic will improve their goal scoring statistics.

The Serb has already scored 17 league goals this season, 10 goals more than the current top scorer at Juventus, Paulo Dybala. Juventus have scored 34 goals in Serie A, 3 goals fewer than 12th place Empoli and they are 11 points behind leaders, Inter Milan.

The first objective will be to finish in the top four and secure Champions League football next season. However, if Vlahovic can score the goals to put Juventus on a winning streak, minds will begin to turn to a sensational push for the title.

Juventus still must play Inter Milan at home at the beginning of April and if they can close the gap before that fixture, we could be in for an exciting finish to the Serie A campaign.
