Newcastle United have already made two signings in the January transfer window. They have added Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to their squad for a combined total of over £40 million and the duo have already been in action for The Magpies in the Premier League.

Having secured a 1-0 win at Leeds United in their most recent league fixture on the 22nd of January, Newcastle are aiming to move out of the relegation zone.

The new owners do not want to see their club relegated to the Championship as their hope is to see the team lift the Premier League title.

Relegation would see that goal put back several years as they would have to negotiate what is a tough Championship league and return to the Premier League.

Therefore, the owners are going to back the manager further in the January transfer window and we expect to see Newcastle bring in more players before the end of the month.

Central defence is one area of the team they want to strengthen, and Diego Carlos has been linked with a move from Sevilla to St James’ Park. The Brazilian centre-back is regarded by many as being one of the top defenders in La Liga and Newcastle have switched their sights to the Sevilla man having given up in their pursuit of Sven Botman.

The Dutch defender was one of the main targets identified by Steve Nickson, the head of recruitment at Newcastle but it appears as though he is staying at Lille for the time being.

However, it is believed Carlos wants to leave Sevilla, but Newcastle have yet to hit the asking price for the player, believed to be over £30 million.

That is one problem Newcastle are going to find as they attempt to sign new players in January and beyond. Every club knows Newcastle United have a lot of money to spend and they will try and get the maximum amount possible from them when negotiating a deal.

Carlos has a release clause of €80 million and while Newcastle will not consider meeting that price for the 28-year-old, they could go back with an improved offer that will tempt Sevilla to sell the defender.

Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile is another player on the radar for Newcastle, but the move has suffered a setback following an injury to the player. Also, it is believed the player would prefer to make a transfer to a Champions League club and for the time being, that is not Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe would like to bring in a central defender with Premier League experience. There have been rumours of a move for the likes of Nat Phillips, Joe Rodon, and Issa Diop and deal for one or even two of these players is more likely than some of the other rumours doing the rounds, including forwards Ousmane Dembele and Eden Hazard.

Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek of Manchester United, and Georginio Wijnaldum and Idrissa Gana Gueye of Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked and it is going to be an interesting final week of the transfer window for Newcastle fans.
