Jesse Marsch was not ready to replace Nagelsmann in Leipzig

Jesse Marsch was not ready to replace Nagelsmann in Leipzig
    12/06/2021 2108

RB Leipzig have dispensed with the services of Jesse Marsch less than six months after his appointment as Die Roten Bullen’s head coach.

The American head coach came in as a replacement for wunderkind Julian Nagelsmann, whose fine work in Leipzig earned him the Bayern Munich job.

Marsch had shown his coaching acumen at RB Salzburg, which is of course part of the same Red Bull group that owns Leipzig.

Hopes were high that Marsch would be the ideal successor for Nagelsmann in Leipzig, but things have gone poorly for the former USA international in Germany.

His now-former team are in 11th place in the Bundesliga after the big summer of changes. Die Roten Bullen are also out of the Champions League, heading into gameweek six of the competition on Tuesday night when they face Manchester City.

Nagelsmann would always be a hard man to replace, especially when star centre-back Dayot Upamecano and influential midfielder Marcel Sabitzer also joined their former boss in Bavaria.

The problem is that Nagelsmann has the potential to be a truly elite head coach. He has been talked about as a potential top-class head coach for close to a decade. Marsch may well develop into a better head coach in the future, as he showed promising signs in the Austrian game and MLS too.

Maybe his time in Leipzig will turn out to be a blessing in disguise in the long run for Jesse Marsch. The promotion to RB Leipzig was maybe a case of too much too early for the 47-year-old. No doubt he won’t be out of management for long.

The next RB Leipzig head coach now faces the task of moving the team up the table, while also attempting to live up to the relative successes of Nagelsmann in Leipzig.
