Liverpool’s have to end recent defensive generosity

Liverpool’s have to end recent defensive generosity
    11/18/2021 1674

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have become synonymous with goal scoring and attacking football. It is highly difficult to keep out Mohamed Salah and co.

However, when the Reds won the English top-flight title in 2020, the team from Merseyside were also extremely effective in defence.

Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk’s performances were at the heart of those solid defensive displays, as Liverpool had the best defensive record in the Premier League.

This season’s Liverpool or indeed last season’s Liverpool without Van Dijk through injury for much of the campaign has not looked as strong in defence. In fact, their defence has looked highly shaky in recent weeks, even with Van Dijk now fully fit and restored to the starting line-up.

They head into this weekend’s home game against Arsenal on the back of a poor defensive run. The Reds started the season by producing some solid defensive displays, but in the four of their last six league matches, Klopp’s team has conceded at least two goals.

One factor that some have talked about when it comes to Liverpool’s defensive issues is the sale of Netherlands international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

The now-PSG star was very good defensively and offered the backline extra protection. The job the former Newcastle man did for the team was maybe underappreciated.

The unconvincing form of Scotland left-back Andy Robertson of late is another potential factor in Liverpool’s recent defensive issues. The full-back has set himself extremely high standards to live by in recent seasons. His recent dip in form is concerning.

The former Hull star is a doubt for Saturday’s game, as he has a hamstring injury.

It could also be argued that Van Dijk has not been the same commanding figure at the heart of the Reds defence. It would be harsh, though considering the serious nature of his injury.

Liverpool have to improve defensively. Although their front line is highly potent and is highly dependable, recent results have shown that they cannot keep outscoring teams. The frontline needs their defensive counterparts to improve or the Reds risk blowing their title chances this season.
