Champions League Madrid derby final could be tight
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will meet in the Champions League final this season after Real overcame Premier League Manchester City 1-0 on aggregate in the semi-final.
Incredibly it will be the second Madrid derby in the Champions League final in three seasons. Los Blancos came out on top 4-1 in extra-time, but needed a stoppage-time equaliser to force extra-time in that clash.
This season’s Champions League results suggest that the latest instalment of the Madrid derby could be a very tight one. Atletico Madrid have kept clean sheets in seven of their last ten games in Europe’s elite competition, while Real have kept eight clean sheets in their last ten games in the competition.
Football predictions suggest that Zinedine Zidane’s team will be favourites to be crowned champions of Europe for an unprecedented 11th time. However, Atletico have been the best defensive unit in Europe this season.
Los Blancos missed chances against City and probably should have won the semi-finals by a bigger margin and Real cannot be that wasteful in front of goal against Atletico, who possess one of the brightest forwards in European football in Antoine Griezmann.
The French forward scored vital goals in the quarter-finals and also the goal that took Diego Simeone’s side through to final against Bayern Munich. He will be a major threat to Real’s defence.
At the other end Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and if fit Karim Benzema will test that solid Atletico Madrid defence to the full.
