Arsenal still not hitting top form

Arsenal still not hitting top form

Arsenal scraped a 1-0 win against Norwich at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with substitute Danny Welbeck scoring the only goal of the game on the hour mark.

The put the Gunners eight points clear of West Ham and Manchester United in fifth and sixth place in the Premier League table. United could reduce that gap back to five points with a win over Leicester later today though.

The Gunners may have won, but there was a feeling that their top players are lacking confidence and are still not hitting their top form. German midfielder Mesut Ozil is the perfect example. The former-Real Madrid star failed to produce an assist in nine top-flight games and scoring just once.

He looked frustrated, as nothing seemed to come off for the playmaker. He did produce a sublime pass to Alexis Sanchez in the second half against the Canaries, but the Chilean lacked the confidence and conviction to find the net firing straight at John Ruddy in the Norwich goal.

Sanchez is another player who has not quite hit the heights of his debut campaign in English football. The Chilean has experienced injury and fitness problems in the last year or so.

The Gunners form is not going to be helped by the seeming unrest against the experienced Wenger, with the side from north London having failed to win the Premier League title in 12 seasons.

The Frenchman is unlikely to leave the club this summer, but an exit next summer is highly likely, as his contract expires and there have not as yet been talks over an extension for the club legend.

Arsenal fans will be disappointed with their campaign so far, but another top-four finish is not the end of the world and next season the Gunners are likely to achieve at the least the same.
