Bielefeld are back in the big time following an 11-year spell away from the Bundesliga. The club from the North Rhine-Westphalia have had an off and on-again relationship with Germany’s top-flight since 1970 and they face a tough battle to remain in the Bundesliga this season.

About the Club

Name: Deutscher Sport-Club Arminia Bielefeld.

Kit: Black shirt with a diagonal white and blue sash across the midriff, black shorts, black socks with a white and blue trim.

Founded: 1905 as Bielefelder FC Arminia.

Stadium: Bielefelder Alm. Capacity, 27,300.

Manager: Uwe Neuhaus. The 60-year old German has been in charge at Bielefeld since December 2018. Between 2005-2018, Uwe had spells in charge of the first teams at Rot-Weiss Essen, Union Berlin, and Dynamo Dresden. Neuhaus oversaw 253 games for Union Berlin and 116 for Dynamo Dresden, so far, he has managed Bielefeld for 62 games.

Key Players: Captain Fabian Klos leads from the front. The 32-year old striker has been at Bielefeld since 2011, scoring 137 goals in 316 appearances for Die Arminen. Japanese midfielder Ritsu Doan is viewed as a real coup on-loan from PSV and is already off the mark for his new club. Former Swansea City centre-back, Mike van der Hoom signed in the summer on a 3-year deal and could prove crucial to the club’s survival chances.

History

Bielefeld first played in the Bundesliga, as we know it, in 197, but only stayed in Germany’s top-flight for two campaigns before returning to the Regionalliga West. The club made a return to the Bundesliga in 1978, got relegated and then returned the following season.

During 1980-1985, Bielefeld enjoyed one of their most successful spells in the top division. The club then disappeared for over 10-years, plying their trade in the 2. Bundesliga, the Oberliga Westfalen, and the Regionalliga West/Sudwest.

The 1996/97 campaign marked Bielefeld’s return to the Bundesliga, but again the club could only manage a two-season stint before becoming a yoyo club through to 2004. The mid to late 2000s was another of the club’s best spells, as they remained in the top-flight for five straight seasons.

Bielefeld dropped as low as the third tier of German football in 2011 and again in 2014, before sorting themselves out and eventually returning to the Bundesliga last season. While Arminia Bielefeld are yet to win any major honours, the club have been successful in the lower divisions. Bielefeld are four-time champions of the 2. Bundesliga and have won the 3. Liga on one occasion. The club have also won the Regionalliga West/Sudwest and the Oberliga Westfalen once. In terms of cups, Bielefeld won the West German Cup in 1966 and 1974 and claimed the Westphalian Cup in 1908, 1932, 1991, 2012, and 2013.

As Things Stand

Arminia Bielefeld currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga table after seven games but are going through their worst losing run of the campaign.

Finishing anywhere above the bottom three would be fine for Uwe Neuhaus’ men who look a little shy up front with just 4-goals scored, which is the worst return in the division.
