Millwall – Season Preview 2019/20
2318

The Lions have been absent from England’s top-flight for 30 years now.

The club finished just four points off the relegation zone last season and have looked more likely to be relegated than promoted in recent years.

Numerous players have joined and left the club in the summer transfer window and manager Niel Harris will be hoping that a fresh approach can bring about a change of fortune.

Last season

Millwall managed just two wins from their opening twelve league matches last season.

Their poor start meant that the team was involved in a relegation battle for the majority of the campaign; securing their place in the Championship with just two games to spare.

They eventually finished four points ahead of Rotherham United however, the team cannot expect to avoid relegation if they perform to a similar standard this season.

Next season

Neil Harris’ priority will be to stave off relegation again this season but exciting assets like Ben Thompson and Jed Wallace may elevate the Lions’ ambitions.

The two players both enjoyed successful 2018/19 campaigns and will be looking to extend their run of good form into the new season.

With so many changes to the squad, the new players must gel quickly otherwise we could see Millwall start this season as they started the last.

Unfortunately, the fans continue to give the club and bad name. Millwall have recently been hit with a fine for racist chanting on the terraces in an FA Cup tie with Everton last season.

Harris will be hoping that the continued unrest in the stands will not have a negative impact on his plans to try and take the club to the next level.
