Luton Town – Season Preview 2019/20

Luton Town – Season Preview 2019/20
1909

Three promotions in six seasons have propelled Luton Town into the second tier of English football.

Luton were playing in the National League as recently as 2013/14, but now find themselves in the Championship following a remarkable rise.

Can the club with the smallest stadium in the division compete at this level?

Last season

It was The Hatters first season back in the third-tier, and after scoring more goals than any other team, Luton finished top of League One.

Manager Nathan Jones left the club in January after being poached by Stoke City. Mick Hardford was put in temporary charge of the team and guided Luton to promotion.

James Colins was the club’s - and the league’s - top scorer last season with 25 goals as the 28-year-old striker enjoyed a fantastic campaign.

Next season

New boss Graeme Jones will know he has a job on his hands as he attempts to keep Luton in the Championship.

Full-backs James Justin and Jack Stacey have both left the club to join Premier League sides, meaning Luton must adapt to life in the second-tier without two of last season’s standout performers.

Despite the departures, the club has made some shrewd acquisitions in the summer transfer window in an attempt to bolster their squad.

Championship experience is key and the likes of Callum McManaman, Martin Cranie and Jacob Butterfield have that in abundance.

Former England under-21 defender, Brendan Galloway, could also prove to be an excellent signing as he joins from Everton.

It won’t be easy for Luton this season. The strength in depth in the Championship is a daunting prospect for newly promoted clubs.

With that being said, Luton’s recent run of promotions will give them the belief that they can compete at this level.
