Bristol City – Season Preview 2019/20
1816

Bristol City have bettered their league finish in every season since returning to the Championship in 2015.

If this upward trend is anything to go by, The Robins are on course for a top-six finish in the 2019/20 campaign.

Never the less, considering the strength of their play-off rivals’ squads, Bristol City are likely to find it difficult to better last season’s 8th place finish.

Last season

The Robins were very inconsistent throughout the first half of last season however seven straight wins at the turn of the year propelled the club into contention for a play-off place.

Following a shaky start, Bristol City will ultimately be disappointed that they didn’t finish in the top six after spending a total of 14 game weeks in the play-off positions.

Andreas Weimann joined the club from Derby County prior to the start of the 2018/19 campaign and the Austrian bagged ten goals and five assists in the league.

Still, the team noticeably missed Bobby Reid. His 19 goals the season before saw him finish as the club’s top scorer but the striker left for newly-promoted Cardiff City in the summer transfer window.

Next season

Consistency is key to gaining promotion from the Championship and manager Lee Johnson is now entering his fourth consecutive full season as Bristol City boss.

While three and a half years may not seem like a long time to be in a job, this is a notable achievement for a football manager in today’s game and such stability has undoubtedly helped the club.

Johnson will be hoping that he can continue to build on the solid foundations that he set at the club.

Former Chelsea pair Tomas Kalas and Jay Dasilva have both been signed on permanent deals following their successful loan spells last season.

The addition of the defensive duo will soften the blow of Lloyd Kelly’s departure to Premier League side Bournemouth.

A win against Leeds United on the opening day of the new campaign will set them up nicely for the season ahead.
