West Ham United – Season Preview 2019/20

West Ham United – Season Preview 2019/20
2218

West Ham’s supporters believe that the club is capable of much more than just a mid-table finish.

They boast a squad that is littered with individual brilliance but the team has often failed to successfully gel in recent years.

Following Marko Arnautovic’s inevitable move to China, can the club’s new big-money signings step up and find The Hammers some much-needed goals?

Last season

West Ham got off to a dismal start in the 2018/19 campaign which saw the club lose their opening four Premier League matches.

The team’s form improved and they gradually worked their way up the table, eventually finishing the season in tenth place.

They picked up three straight wins against Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Watford in their final three fixtures, scoring eight goals in the process.

Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping that his side can pick up where they left off and start the new campaign as they finished the last.

Next season

The Hammers struggled for goals last season and with top scorer Marko Arnautovic no longer at the club, the team will need to find goals elsewhere.

Sebastien Haller scored 15 Bundesliga goals for Eintracht Frankfurt last season and has been signed to replace Arnautovic in attack.

The giant Frenchman also made nine assists meaning he was involved in 24 goals throughout the duration of the 2018/19 campaign. This is certainly a statistic that will please the club’s fans.

Pablo Fornals has also been brought in from Villarreal and the attacking midfielder – who has a couple of Spain caps to his name – will add an all-important spark of creativity to the side.

West Ham open their account with a match against last season’s champions Manchester City.

Games against Brighton, Watford, Norwich City and Aston Villa follow. This will be seen as a winnable run of matches and an opportunity to get some early points of the board.
