Watford – Season Preview 2019/20
2537

The Hornets have once again established themselves as a regular top-flight side after four consecutive seasons back in the Premier League.

Despite a mid-season managerial change, Watford managed to juggle the demands of the Premier League with an impressive cup run last season.

Spirits will be high heading into the new season following the club’s successful 2018/19 campaign.

Led by their captain and talisman Troy Deeney, can Watford live up to expectations?

Last season

Following Marco Silva’s departure to fellow Premier League side Everton, Javi Gracia was appointed as manager of Watford midway through the season and enjoyed a promising start to life at Vicarage Road.

He guided the club to their first FA Cup Final since 1984 while also securing an eleventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Although they were thrashed by Manchester City in the final, everybody involved with the club will ultimately look back on the 2018/19 campaign as a success.

Next season

Watford fans will be desperate for a stable and steady campaign following the managerial merry-go-round at Vicarage Road in recent years.

Despite the ruthless nature of owner Gino Pozzo, the club’s mid-table finish coupled with their FA Cup final appearance should be enough to see Gracia given time to build on his impressive start.

The form of Gerard Deulofeu will be key to Watford’s hopes of a top ten finish next season. The tricky Spanish winger found himself in and out of the team last term but certainly has the potential to solidify a place in the starting eleven.

The former Barcelona man was the club’s joint-top scorer last season with 11 goals and if he can find some consistency, he is more than capable of scoring even more in the next campaign.

The addition of Craig Dawson on a free transfer from West Brom is an extremely shrewd acquisition and his top-flight experience will add strength in depth to Watford’s defense.
