Goals win matches, but defences win titles – or so the saying goes. As it stands, the Premier League’s best defence in 2024-25 is on pace to fail to win the title. So, the best defence doesn’t always win trophies.

While fans often remember screamers, hat-tricks, and last-minute winners, the true foundation of footballing greatness is often found at the back. Clean sheets and well-drilled lines rarely steal headlines, but they form the backbone of champions.

Chelsea’s 2004-05 side remains the benchmark for defensive excellence in the Premier League. Under Jose Mourinho, the Blues conceded just 15 goals in 38 matches, a feat yet to be matched. With Petr Cech, John Terry, and Ricardo Carvalho at its heart, it was a side built on structure and discipline.

The second-best return came from an unlikely source – Arsenal’s 1998-99 squad. Though the Gunners finished second to Manchester United, they let in only 17 goals all season. Anchored by the likes of Tony Adams, Martin Keown, and David Seaman, their English core was as solid as it gets.

Chelsea’s 2005-06 campaign also earns a place among the greats, with just 22 goals conceded. While not quite as watertight as the previous season, Mourinho’s men still managed to dominate the league defensively.

With Terry ever-present and Frank Lampard influential going forward, it was another title-winning blend of steel and style.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2007-08 Manchester United team matched Chelsea’s tally with 22 goals against. Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic formed one of the finest centre-back pairings of the modern era.

Behind them, Edwin van der Sar was in commanding form as United secured both the league and Champions League titles.

Liverpool’s 2018-19 team also let in just 22 goals, narrowly missing out on the title to Manchester City. Virgil van Dijk was imperious, while Alisson provided assurance in goal throughout the campaign. The Reds lost only once that season, finishing with 97 points.

City themselves were superb that same year, conceding just one more goal than Liverpool – 23 in total.

Aymeric Laporte, Kyle Walker, and Ederson were ever-present, while Fernandinho’s adaptability added flexibility. Pep Guardiola’s side spent just 122 minutes behind all season, a remarkable statistic.

Chelsea’s 2008-09 campaign is another standout, despite managerial upheaval. With three different bosses across the season, the Blues still conceded only 24 times. Their defensive consistency remained intact, thanks to a core of experienced performers.

Manchester United matched that total in the same season, on their way to a third straight league title. Though Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra missed time through injury, Vidic and Van der Sar stepped up. Their leadership helped United edge a competitive campaign.

Liverpool also make the list for their 2005-06 season, with 25 goals conceded. Managed by Rafa Benitez, the Reds were often pragmatic, relying on a solid spine of Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia, and Xabi Alonso. They finished third, but it was a campaign built on grit more than flair.

Defences may not make the highlight reels, but their importance can’t be overstated. The best teams in Premier League history didn’t just outscore the rest – they out-defended them. And in doing so, they left legacies every bit as memorable as any golden boot winner.
