Is Igor Tudor the answer for Juventus?

Juventus have been an absolute mess this season. Hiring a young, up-and-coming coach isn’t unusual in football, but this time, it didn’t work.

It didn’t fail spectacularly either, but it certainly didn’t go as intended.

When you’re Juventus, there’s a standard to uphold, and being eight games away from the end of the league season with no guaranteed Champions League qualification isn’t it. Thiago Motta’s Juventus looked mediocre, struggling to beat teams they were clearly better than.

Outside of a couple of great performances—like against City and Inter—there wasn’t much to show. The club invested heavily, yet most of those players underperformed.

So what happened? Well, Motta got the boot. Enter Igor Tudor, a former Juventus player who gave everything during his nine-year tenure at the club.

Tudor abandoned his principles for Juventus—ones he upheld with Napoli when he refused to be a short-term "firefighting solution" without a long-term plan.

But Juventus, in Igor Tudor’s life, is something else. Something greater. Something he always saw as his ultimate coaching goal.

It’s a hell of a job because this team is truly a mess. A makeshift defence, an underperforming midfield, and a lacklustre attack. How do you fix it? By being a maniac—the right kind of maniac—just like Igor Tudor.

He’s been brought in to shake up a squad that’s undoubtedly talented but likely doesn’t understand what it means to wear the badge. As someone who played under Marcello Lippi’s Juventus, one of the best teams the club has ever had, Tudor knows exactly what it means.

He loves this club, and he won’t sugarcoat things for anyone. For him, Juventus stands above all else. The goal is clear: finish in the top four and secure Champions League football. After that, he’ll sit down with the board and see if he’s earned their trust for next season.

Though he’s never coached more than 50 games at any club, Tudor will throw himself into this job with everything he has. This is likely his one shot at coaching the club he loves. Nine games to prove he belongs. Nine games to show he’s a coach of Juventus calibre.

The road ahead won’t be easy. Direct clashes with Bologna, Lazio, and Roma—all away games—stand in his way. But in his short-term stints, Tudor has usually delivered.

Time will tell if he can do it again, but his appointment alone speaks volumes about how highly he’s regarded.

He was a player here, then an assistant, and now the head coach. Only the second non-Italian to lead Juventus in the last 50 years. That means something. Juventus means something to him.

Now we wait to see if this gamble pays off for the Old Lady.
