    Assessing Torino’s Table-Topping Form in Serie A

    Assessing Torino’s Table-Topping Form in Serie A
    09/27/2024 1400

With Matchday 6 of the 2024-25 Serie A season getting underway this weekend, there is a surprise leader at the summit of the standings.

Torino find themselves one point clear of second-placed Napoli and third-placed Udinese, having avoided defeat across their opening games.

Are Il Toro simply enjoying a purple patch? Or could they continue to lead the way? Below, Forebet looks at the stats and trends behind Torino’s impressive start.

Torino kicked off their campaign by holding AC Milan to a 2-2 draw at the San Siro, with the hosts scoring two goals after 89 minutes to rescue a point.

Paolo Vanoli’s side then claimed back-to-back victories over Atalanta (2-1) and Venezia (1-0), despite facing large spells of pressure in both matches.

On Matchday 4, Torino played out a goalless draw with Lecce, failing to register a single attempt on target while facing 20 shots.

However, Il Toro returned to winning ways last weekend, claiming a 3-2 victory over Hellas Verona while racking up 71% possession and 16 shots.

Torino have scored eight goals in five leagues games this season (1.6 goals per game), with only five teams scoring more goals in 2024-25.

Vanoli’s men have netted over 1.5 goals in three of their five matches, scoring over 2.5 goals for the first time in last weekend’s victory over Verona.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Torino have conceded five goals (1 goals per game), keeping a clean sheet on two occasions.

Former Southampton striker Che Adams has hit the ground running in Italy, registering two goals and one assists across his first five Serie A appearances.

Veteran striker Duvan Zapata has also impressed following his move from Atalanta, scoring two goals while wearing the captain’s armband.

It is fair to say that Torino have been helped by bigger clubs failing to make a strong start to the season, with several high-profile teams flattering to deceive so far.

For example, Inter Milan and AC Milan find themselves outside the top five, while Juventus head into Matchday 6 on a three-game drawing streak.

Still, there is no hiding the fact that Il Toro have posted a series of impressive results this term, so they thoroughly deserve to be where they are.

Of course, it will be difficult for Torino to maintain this pace throughout the campaign, but they will be confident of achieving something special.
