The Stats Behind Arsenal’s Set-Piece Victory Over Spurs

The Stats Behind Arsenal’s Set-Piece Victory Over Spurs
    09/17/2024 1022

When Arsenal won a corner in the 64th minute against rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their first clash of the 2024/25 Premier League season, there was an air of inevitability about the outcome.

Spurs had been applying some pressure in the Arsenal half but it was the away team who scored the only goal of the game, from the corner, to take maximum points.

It was another disappointing derby defeat for Spurs but the way they conceded the goal was not a surprise.

Gabriel’s goal, headed home from a corner, means 3 of Arsenal’s last 4 goals against Spurs have come from set-pieces.

When the problem of conceding goals from set-pieces was raised with Spurs manager, Ange Postecoglou, last season, he dismissed it without admitting it was an issue.

However, the statistics tell a different story and since the beginning of last season, Spurs have conceded 18 goals from set-pieces and that stat does not include penalties.

Only relegated Luton Town and Sheffield United plus Nottingham Forest have conceded more goals from set-pieces than Spurs during that time.

If we look at Arsenal’s form at set-pieces, predictive analytics show there was always a good chance the Gunners were going to score from a set-piece against Spurs.

Since the start of last season, Arsenal have scored 24 goals from set-pieces, not including penalties, which is more than any other team in the Premier League.

Having appointed set-piece coach, Nicolas Jover, Arsenal have become the most dangerous team in Europe from free-kicks and corners. Arsenal have scored 43 goals from corners alone since Jover was added to the staff in 2021.

It is clearly no fluke that Arsenal are scoring goals from corners and that is something that should have been drilled into the Spurs players before the game.

However, they were too weak from the corner that led to the goal, with both Guglielmo Vicario and Cristian Romero allowing themselves to be blocked too easily by Arsenal players.

Vicario looked nervous in the first half when defending set-pieces and claiming corners has become a clear weakness for the Spurs goalkeeper.

Having witnessed the match against Arsenal, other teams coming up against Spurs are going to see set-pieces as the perfect opportunity to score goals.

Their next Premier League game is against Brentford at home, a team who came close to scoring from a corner against Manchester City last weekend.

The Bees will certainly be aware how corners could be one of their best chances of scoring goals against Spurs and it will be interesting to see how Brentford approach their set-pieces in that match.

Will Spurs be working on the way they defend corners this week? They face Coventry City away in the League Cup before playing Brentford at home in the Premier League.

Both matches should provide an insight into any work that has been completed on the training ground.
