Can Cesc Fabregas’ Star-Studded Como Make an Impact on Serie A?

Can Cesc Fabregas’ Star-Studded Como Make an Impact on Serie A?
    09/13/2024 918

When Como 1907 ended a 21-year absence from Serie A by gaining promotion last season, everyone involved with the club looked forward to the top-flight return.

However, the Lombardy outfit currently find themselves rock bottom of the table after three matches, having scored a solitary goal this season.

Como, who are managed by Spanish legend Cesc Fabregas, experienced a baptism of fire on the opening weekend, suffering a humbling 3-0 defeat to Juventus.

Fabregas’ side managed to hold Cagliari to a 1-1 draw in their second game, but they swiftly returned to losing ways, recording a 1-0 defeat against Udinese.

With a high-profile manager and several big-name players at the club, Como have the potential to upset the apple cart this term.

The club enjoyed a dream summer transfer window, with Fabregas managing to lure multiple prominent players to Lombardy.

Como made several free transfers, including former Liverpool stars Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno from Villarreal, as well as Sergi Roberto from Barcelona.

Raphael Varane also joined from Manchester United on a free transfer, although the French World Cup winner looks set to miss the majority of the season through injury.

On top of that, Como were able to bring in Andrea Belotti from Roma for just €4.5 million and Alberto Dossena from Cagliari for €8 million.

There was a time when Belotti was one of the most prolific strikers in European football, especially when he played for Torino between 2015 and 2022.

Belotti scored 100 goals in 232 Serie A appearances for Torino, indicating that he’s got what it takes to find the back of the net on a consistent basis for Como.

Let’s not forget that Como is also home to Patrick Cutrone, who has represented Italy, AC Milan, Valencia and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the past.

It’s been a wild ride for Como, who have come from Serie D – the fourth tier of Italian football – to Serie A in just five years.

Of course, it is still early days in the 2024-25 campaign, with only three matches in the books, but Como will be eager to move up the table in the coming weeks.

With Fabregas at the helm – and players like Belotti, Roberto and Varane in their ranks – don’t be surprised if Como begin to ruffle a few feathers in Serie A.
