Brentford opened their 2024-25 Premier League account with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, but a key player was missing from their squad.
Thomas Frank decided to omit star striker Ivan Toney from the Bees’ opening match, as rumours regarding his future continue to circulate.
Brentford are reluctant to sell Toney, but the 28-year-old's contract expires next year, meaning he could leave the club for free after this season.

Given that Brentford will likely receive a sizeable transfer fee for the England forward, it feels like he is destined to leave the Gtech Community Stadium this summer.
The question is: where will Toney go? Several clubs are reportedly interested in the striker, but time is running out to finalise a deal.
It looked as though Tottenham Hotspur would sign Toney earlier this year, but the likelihood of that deal coming to fruition is now very low.
Earlier this month, Spurs signed Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for around £65 million, so they won’t need to bring in another striker.
Manchester United and Arsenal could each make a late move for Toney, although both sides have already strengthened in attack during the current window.
In recent days, Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli have emerged as the new favourites to acquire Toney’s signature.
It has been reported that Al-Ahli had a £35 million bid rejected last week, but they are expected to return with a bigger offer in the coming days.
Toney would be a valuable addition to many clubs, having established himself as a top-class forward over the past few years.
After scoring 49 goals in 94 appearances for Peterborough United, Toney moved to Brentford in 2020 before helping the Bees win promotion in 2021.
The striker has chalked up 72 goals and 23 assists in 141 games for Brentford, cementing his status among the Premier League’s top attackers.
However, there is a sense that Toney has outgrown Brentford, with a number of bigger clubs interested in securing his services.
It remains to be seen where Toney will end up this summer, given that Tottenham have effectively pulled out of the race.
With Arsenal and Man Utd also seemingly turning their attention elsewhere, Toney may have to settle for a move to Saudi Arabia.
The transfer window will close on Friday, August 30 at 11pm in England. By then, we should know where Toney will be playing his football.
