Having made his debut for Spain against Georgia on Friday night in a European Championship qualifier, Lamine Yamal became Spain's youngest ever international.

Yamal was just 16 years and 57 days old when he came off the bench for his country in Tbilisi and not only did he make his debut for Spain, but he also scored a goal.

Despite not being legally able to drive, Yamal is not the youngest player to play at international level. Continue below as we look at the youngest international footballers.

Lukas Knecht

He may not be a well-known name in world football, but Lukas Knecht holds the record for being the youngest player to represent his country.

Aged just 14 years and 2 days, Knecht made his debut for the Northern Mariana Islands on the 1st of April 2007.

It is not an April fool joke and Knecht made 11 appearances between 2007 and 2014 for his country plus the defender played 8 times for Georgia Southwestern State University, in the United States.

In total, there are 11 players who made their debut under the age of 15 but like Knecht, none of them have had a good career in the game, other than Stephen Appiah.

Stephen Appiah

Stephen Appiah made his debut for Ghana when he was just 14 years and 322 days old.

The match was played on the 11th of November 1995 and Ghana beat Sierra Leone 2-0.

Appiah went on to make 67 appearances for Ghana and the midfielder scored 14 goals for his country.

Appiah enjoyed a successful club career, playing for several teams in Europe including Udinese, Parma, Juventus, Fenerbahce, and Bologna.

Mohammed Kallon

We stay in Africa for the next big-name player in our list of the youngest international footballers and Mohammed Kallon made his debut for Sierra Leone aged 15 years and 93 days.

The striker made his debut on the 7th of January 1995 in a 2-0 win over Gambia. Kallon played 39 times for his country between 1995 and 2012, scoring 8 goals.

Kallon had a long career in Europe, playing mostly in Italy for Inter Milan, Bologna, Genoa, Cagliari, Reginna, and Vicenza.

Martin Ødegaard

Moving to Europe and we come to a player who is still participating at the top level, Martin Ødegaard.

The Norwegian international made his debut for his country in August 2014 at the age of 15 years and 253 days.

The match ended 0-0 against the United Arab Emirates but at the time of writing, Ødegaard has represented his country 51 times and is currently a key player for Arsenal in the English Premier League.

Victor Wanyama

Heading back to Africa and Victor Wanyama made his debut for Kenya when just 15 years and 336 days old.

The defensive midfielder played his first match for his country on the 27th of May 2007 but they lost 1-0 to Nigeria.

Wanyama is still representing his country today and has played over 60 times for Kenya.

His notable clubs include Celtic, Southampton, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Interestingly, his older brother, McDonald Mariga Wanyama, also played for Kenya, making his debut when he was 15 years 345 days old.

Some of the other well-known players to make their debut for their country as a youngster include Samuel Eto'o of Cameroon at 15 years 364 days, Diego Maradona of Argentina at 16 years and 120 days, and Pele of Brazil at 16 years and 9 months.
