Napoli end 33-year wait for Serie A glory

Napoli end 33-year wait for Serie A glory
    05/05/2023 1661

After more than three decades without a Serie A title, Napoli finally secured the scudetto thanks to a 1-1 draw with Udinese on Thursday evening.

The draw saw them move onto 80 points at the summit of the table – 16 points clear of second-placed Lazio – meaning they have an unassailable lead with five games remaining.

The club’s last Serie A triumph came all the way back in 1989-90, when the legendary Diego Maradona helped Napoli win the title at the expense of Marco van Basten’s AC Milan and Roberto Baggio’s Fiorentina.

33 years later, the title is back in Naples thanks to the current crop of superstars. So, how did they do it?

In short, Napoli have been sensational this season. Led by manager Luciano Spalletti, Gli Azzurri have lost just three of their 33 league games, picking up 25 wins and five draws along the way.

Not only are Napoli the top scorers in Serie A, but they also boast the best defensive record in the division. Spalletti’s men have netted 69 goals (2.09 goals per game) while conceding just 23 (0.69 goals against per game).

It has been a real team effort from Napoli, from goalkeeper Alex Meret and centre-back Kim Min-jae to midfielders such as Stanislav Lobotka, Piotr Zielinksi and Frank Anguissa.

That said, two players have continuously stood out from the crowd throughout the title-winning campaign – Victor Osimhem and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Osimhem has spearheaded Napoli’s attack this term, scoring 27 goals in 34 games across all competitions, including 22 goals in 27 Serie A appearances.

Meanwhile, Kvaratskhelia has been the driving force behind the team’s creativity, racking up 14 goals and 16 assists in all competitions, including 12 goals and 12 assists in 29 league outings.

Napoli kicked off their 2022-23 Serie A campaign with a mammoth 15-game unbeaten streak, which also produced 11 consecutive wins. In January, Inter Milan became the first team to beat Napoli this season.

After losing to Inter, Spalletti’s men chalked up an eight-game winning run before falling to Lazio. Although Gli Azzurri have stuttered in recent weeks – drawing three of their last four matches – they can now call themselves champions of Italy.

Napoli’s Champions League journey ended at the quarter-final stage as Serie A rivals AC Milan notched a 2-1 aggregate victory last month. However, Spalletti’s side won’t be thinking about that right now.

At the end of the day, Napoli have enjoyed a phenomenal campaign and thoroughly deserve to be Serie A champions. Hopefully, the residents of the football-mad city won’t have to wait another 33 years for the next scudetto.
