The Copa del Rey, or the Campeonato de España–Copa de Su Majestad el Rey, to give the tournament its full name, is the major cup competition in Spanish football.
It was contested for the first time in 1903, making it the oldest football competition played across the whole of Spain. The 2022/23 Copa del Rey is the 121st edition of the competition and the final will be contested between Real Madrid and Osasuna.
The first Copa del Rey in 1903 was a national championship and the competition has had many formats and names over the years. The Copa del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, Copa de Su Majestad El Rey Alfonso XIII, Copa del Presidente de la República, Copa de España, and Copa de Su Excelencia El Generalísimo are just some of the previous names of the Copa del Rey.
Athletic Club won the first edition of the Copa del Rey and were winners again the following year without having to play the final as their opponents, Español de Madrid, did not turn up for the match.
In terms of the top clubs in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona lead the way on 31 victories, with their most recent success coming in the 2020/21 season. The Catalan giants have reached the final of the Copa del Rey on 42 occasions.
Many fans will be forgiven for thinking Real Madrid would be the second most successful club in Copa del Rey history but that honour falls to Athletic Club. They have 23 Copa del Rey titles to their name but you must go back to 1983/84 to find the last time they won the tournament. Most of Athletic Club’s success came between 1903 and 1958.
Real Madrid have won the Copa del Rey 19 times and will be hoping to close the gap on Athletic Club by defeating Osasuna in the 2022/23 final. Real Madrid have won La Liga and the Champions League many times over the last decade but they have struggled to win the Copa del Rey and their most recent success came in the 2013/14 season.
Only 15 different clubs have won the Copa del Rey, with Real Betis being the most recent team to lift the trophy having beat Valencia via a penalty shootout in 2021/22. That was the third victory for Real Betis in the competition.
Considering their success in the cup until the late 1950s, it comes as no surprise to see a player from Athletic Club as the top scorer in the history of the Copa del Rey. Telmo Zarra scored 81 times for Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey between 1939 and 1957.
Josep Samitier is second in the all-time top scorers chart with 70 goals, most of which were scored for Barcelona in the 1920s and 30s but the forward also netted 5 times in the Copa del Rey for Real Madrid.
Of the currently active players, Lionel Messi is fourth in the top scorers list with 54 goals but having left Barcelona, it is unlikely the Argentine is going to add to his tally.
