2315

We have five high-profile derbies to get our teeth into at the start of March, with some of European football’s biggest rivalries set to be reignited.

From England to Croatia and Spain to Serbia, these upcoming derbies are destined to get the blood racing. Join us as we profile the top contests to keep an eye out for.

Dinamo Zagreb vs. Lokomotiva Zagreb – Zagreb Derby (March 1)

First up, Dinamo Zagreb and Lokomotiva Zagreb are set to lock horns in the Croatian Cup quarter-finals on March 1. Naturally, there are always fireworks when the foes from the nation’s capital do battle.

The two sides are separated by 30 points in the HNL standings, with table-topping Dinamo leading eight-placed Lokomotiva. Still, Lokomotiva will fancy their chances of claiming the bragging rights in the cup.

Real Madrid vs. Barcelona – El Clásico (March 2)

Arguably the most famous derby in world football, El Clásico needs little introduction. This rivalry sees Spain’s most successful clubs – Real Madrid and Barcelona – dish up drama on every occasion.

The Spanish giants will renew acquaintances on March 2 in the Copa de Rey semi-finals, so there is bound to be plenty of passion on display. Barca are leading the La Liga title race, but Los Blancos are ready to pounce.

Red Star Belgrade vs. Partizan Belgrade – Eternal Derby (March 3)

Also known as the Derby of Southeast Europe, the Eternal Derby is an infamous clash between Red Star Belgrade and Partizan Belgrade – two bitter rivals based in Serbia’s capital city.

The old foes have played out 168 official meetings over the years, with Red Star (66 wins) holding the upper hand over Partizan (47). Ahead of their clash on March 3, they occupy the top two spots in the Super League standings.

Cardiff City vs. Bristol City – Severnside Derby (March 4)

The Severnside Derby is one of the most intriguing rivalry showdowns in UK football, as it sees Welsh team Cardiff City clash with English team Bristol City, with the clubs separated by the River Severn.

Both sides play their football in the EFL Championship, with Bristol City leading Cardiff by nine points. Sitting a handful of points outside the relegation zone, Cardiff will be desperate to triumph on March 4.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United – Northwest Derby (March 5)

Fresh from winning the EFL Cup, Manchester United will be looking to heap more misery on struggling Liverpool when the two rivals face off at Anfield in the Premier League on March 5.

Man United have won 83 of the 210 previous meetings, while Liverpool have claimed 70 victories. With the Red Devils leading Jurgen Klopp’s side by 13 points in the table, we are destined to witness a memorable showdown at Anfield.
