Boxing Day is a special time for English football. The tradition of playing football on Boxing Day goes back to the 1888/89 season and it remains one of the biggest days of football in the calendar for the Premier League.

As such, we have seen many records set from the matches played on Boxing Day and there are plenty of interesting statistics surrounding this day in the English topflight.

We start with the famous set of results from Boxing Day 1963. 10 matches were played in the First Division, which is the current Premier League, and a total of 66 goals were scored. That is an average of 6.6 goals per game in the league on Boxing Day, a total that has never since been matched.

In the modern game, we rarely see a full list of Premier League fixtures on the same day, even for Boxing Day, so the record is highly unlikely to be broken.

Burnley beat Manchester United 6-1, Fulham beat Ipswich 10-1, West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham Hotspur played out a 4-4 draw, and Blackburn Rovers beat West Ham United 8-2. So, there was one game that had 11 goals and that is a record for the total number of goals in one match on Boxing Day.

In terms of individual goal scorers in the Premier League on Boxing Day, Harry Kane’s strike against Crystal Palace last season means his joint top with 9 goals scored on Boxing Day.

The England international shares top spot with Robbie Fowler. Alan Shearer and Robbie Keane both have 8 goals to their name. Spurs face Brentford away on Boxing Day this season and Kane could set a record for goals on Boxing Day in the Premier League.

Continuing with individual achievements and current Crystal Palace manager, Patrick Vieira holds the record for the most wins by a player on Boxing Day in the Premier League.

The former Arsenal midfielder won all 8 of his Premier League fixtures played on the 26th of December, giving the Frenchman a 100% record on Boxing Day.

Some players have not been so lucky and both Pep Guardiola and Riyad Mahrez will be pleased Manchester City do not play on the 26th of December this season. Mahrez has lost 5 of the 6 games he has played on Boxing Day in the Premier League.

His only victory came in the 6-3 win over former club Leicester City in the Premier League in the 2021/22 campaign. Manchester City were 4-0 up after only 25 minutes, including a goal from Mahrez. Prior to that win, Mahrez had lost all 5 games played in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Switching to women’s football and the attendance record for a domestic women’s match in England was set on Boxing Day in 1920. Over 53,000 fans packed into Goodison Park to watch a charity match between Dick, Kerr Ladies and St Helens Ladies.

The match raised money for wounded soldiers and such was the popularity of the game, thousands of supporters we locked outside the stadium.
