Top 5 Boxing Day Results in History
    12/22/2022 2147

English football has always played around a hectic schedule over the Christmas period with the Premier League traditionally taking centre stage on Boxing Day. Here, we run through the most famous and unexpected results on Boxing Day in England’s top flight.

    Coventry City 3-2 Arsenal (1999)

It feels like a lifetime ago since Coventry City were competitive in the Premier League. Back in 1999, however, the Midlands side caused a few upsets and even managed to dent Arsenal's title hopes on Boxing Day with a home win over the Gunners.

Coventry saw Mustapha Hadji, Gary McAllister and a young Robbie Keane all net a goal each as they upset the odds and started a downward spiral for Arsenal that saw them eventually finish almost 20 points behind league winners Manchester United.

    Burnley 6-1 Manchester United (1963)

You’ve likely stumbled across the stunning Boxing Day results of 1963 more than once. An outrageous 66 goals were scored that day over 60 years ago, as Fulham incredibly smashed Ipswich Town 10-1, while Blackburn Rovers beat West Ham United 8-2 away from home.

However, despite the chaos taking place around the country, it was Burnley’s victory over United that stole the show.

United finished runners-up behind rivals Liverpool that year with the Clarets finishing down in ninth. In fact, of the 42 games played in the league that day, United lost only three games, including this one.

    Fulham 10-1 Ipswich Town (1963)

Speaking of the famous 66-goal day in 1963, we can’t not include Fulham’s miraculous victory over Ipswich.

Ipswich were relegated that season and finished with only 25 points from 42 games. Fulham ended up finishing 15th, but with them scoring only 45 goals at home that year, it meant they scored almost 40% of their goals on home soil on this one day.

The Cottagers led 5-1 at half-time after Graham Leggat netted four times, with Bobby Howfield scoring a hat-trick too. It remains one of the highest-scoring games in English football history and Fulham's biggest league win ever witnessed.

    Chelsea 4-4 Aston Villa (2007)

There was a period in the Premier League where Chelsea simply never lost at Stamford Bridge. However, Aston Villa came incredibly close on Boxing Day back in 2007.

Aston Villa took the lead at Stamford Bridge through Shaun Maloney before scoring a second to double the away side's tally. Chelsea would fight back and eventually take the lead twice. The game was then at 4-3 to the home side in injury time until Gareth Barry netted from the spot after an Ashley Cole handball.

    An instant Premier League classic.

    Manchester United 0-3 Liverpool (1978)

Although not an incredibly shocking result as Liverpool won the title that year with United finishing ninth, the Reds were still heading into this 1978 First Division clash having not scored at Old Trafford for five games.

Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case and a memorable goal from David Fairclough stole the headlines that day, as United fans famously even applauded the final goal from Fairclough.
