Top 3 Memorable Encounters in World Cup History

Top 3 Memorable Encounters in World Cup History
    11/17/2022 1573

We have witnessed many memorable matches at the World Cup over the years. It is not easy to pick 3 games from the tournaments but below, you will find what we believe to be the top 3 memorable encounters in World Cup History.

Brazil v Germany (2014 FIFA World Cup)

Brazil were the hosts of the 2014 World Cup and they met Germany in the semi-final of the competition. The match was played at the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte and there was high expectation from the home crowd.

Both nations were undefeated in the tournament but Brazil were missing Neymar in attack and Thiago Silva in defence. Both teams had attempts on goal in the opening minutes but it was Germany who opened the scoring from a corner after 11 minutes.

Brazil pushed for an equaliser but only 12 minutes later, it was Germany who scored again. Miroslav Klose scored the goal and in doing so, he became the all-time World Cup top scorer.

It was at this point that Brazil totally lost control of the match as Germany scored a third just one minute later and a fourth goal in the 26th minute, almost directly from Brazil’s kick-off.

In the 29th minute, Germany scored again and no one inside the stadium could believe what they were watching. Germany added 2 more goals to make it 7 in the second half and Brazil scored a consolation goal late in the game. Brazilian fans and some of the players were in tears.

It was one of the most memorable matches of any World Cup  and goes down as the biggest loss in the history of the Brazilian national team at the tournament.

Spain v Netherlands (2014 FIFA World Cup)

We stay at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for our second match between Spain and Netherlands. This was the group stage of the competition and Spain were the defending World Cup champions having won the tournament in 2010.

It was the Spanish who opened the scoring from the penalty spot but Netherlands equalised shortly before the interval thanks to a spectacular header from Robin van Persie. It took only 9 minutes of the second half for Netherlands to take the lead courtesy of Arjen Robben.

Having hit the crossbar in the 61st minute, Netherlands increased their advantage thanks to a header by Stefan de Vrij and when Van Persie dispossessed Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas to make it four, a big shock was on the cards.

Robben sealed a memorable night for the Dutch with a lovely goal and it was a massive blow to Spain, who were considered one of the favourites to win the tournament. Spain were eliminated from the group stage and Netherlands went on to reach the semi-final.

France vs Senegal (2002 World Cup)

France entered the 2002 World Cup as defending champions and started their defence with a group game against Senegal. It was the first appearance in the tournament for the African nation and the French were expected to cruise to victory.

However, Senegal had other ideas and Pape Bouba Diop stepped up to the score the only goal of the match in the 30th minute. The withdrawal of Zinedine Zidane due to injury did not help the French but they were still expected to win what was the opening game of the tournament.

Senegal's El Hadji Diouf was the star performer, with Marcel Desailly and Frank Leboeuf both struggling to contain the forward. It was a sensational World Cup debut for Senegal and a match that will live long in the memory.
