2022 World Cup Preview – Group C Insight

2022 World Cup Preview – Group C Insight
    11/17/2022 7760

Not only are Argentina the clear favourites to win Group C, but they are also among the favourites to life the World Cup trophy. Mexico, Poland and Saudia Arabia join the South American champs in Group C. Let’s take a closer look at all four sides.

    Argentina

    • 2018 World Cup: Round of 16
    • Best World Cup Performance: Winners (1978, 1986)
    • Manager: Lionel Scaloni
    • FIFA World Ranking: #3

Following a disappointing last-16 exit at the 2018 World Cup, Argentina will be desperate to make amends this year. Lionel Scaloni’s side head to Qatar as the reigning South American champions, having defeated arch-rivals Brazil in last year’s Copa America final.

Naturally, all eyes will be on Lionel Messi when the tournament kicks off. The legendary forward has been in exceptional form for PSG this season and will be expected to add to his 90 international goals in Qatar.

    Mexico

    • 2018 World Cup: Round of 16
    • Best World Cup Performance: Quarter-Finals (1970, 1986)
    • Manager: Gerardo Martino
    • FIFA World Ranking: #13

Remarkably, Mexico have fallen in the last 16 at each of the previous seven World Cups. El Tri invariably progress from the group stage, but they always seem to struggled when it comes to the knockout phase.

Gerardo Martino’s men finished as runners-up to the USA in both the 2019-20 Nations League and 2021 Gold Cup, falling short once again? Can they finally reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1986?

    Poland

    • 2018 World Cup: Group Stage
    • Best World Cup Performance: Semi-Finals (1974, 1982)
    • Manager: Czeslaw Michniewicz
    • FIFA World Ranking: #26

It goes without saying that Robert Lewandowski will be the man to watch when Poland kick off their World Cup campaign. The prolific striker has netted 76 goals in 134 games for his country and will be the Poles’ focal point in Qatar.

Earlier this year, Poland claimed wins over Sweden and Wales before suffering defeats to the Netherlands and Belgium. This indicates that Czeslaw Michniewicz’s side are not on the same level as Europe’s strongest teams.

    Saudi Arabia

    • 2018 World Cup: Group Stage
    • Best World Cup Performance: Round of 16 (1994)
    • Manager: Herve Renard
    • FIFA World Ranking: #51

Saudi Arabia’s best Word Cup performance came at their debut tournament, where they reached the last 16 in 1994. Since then, the Green Falcons have failed to make it past the group stage on four occasions.

Having managed to win just one game across their past four World Cup appearances, Saudi Arabia are not expected to pull up any trees in Qatar.
